Active Schools learn to Canoe sessions at Forth Canoe Club

Craiglockhart Primary School

During the summer term Forth Canoe Club will run sessions on a Tuesday and Thursday after school for Craiglockhart P6 & P7 pupils.

What we will provide

Active Schools Courses are designed for children who are just starting out with paddling. We will aim to use a range of different boats and will use the Paddlepower awards to monitor your child’s progression. These sessions are aimed at building confidence on the water and developing new skills while at the same time ensuring they have a fun and enjoyable experience.

We are keen that our young paddlers have fun as they develop their skills and so games will be a big part of the learning experience.

What your child should bring with them

We ask that children bring a bottle of water and a snack with them. In addition they will need suitable clothing for kayaking (a fleece, warm t-shirt/thermal, tracksuit trousers, cagoule/windproof, hat and towel) and a change of clothes and footwear in case they get wet. We encourage children to wear footwear in the kayaks, plimsolls are ideal.

Contact details

Poppy Croal is the Club Coach for Forth Canoe Club. She will supervise the courses.

How will my child get there & where is the pick up?

The coach will come to the school for 3.15pm and will pick up the children and walk them to the Forth Canoe Club Boat House for the sessions.

Please come to the Boathouse to pick up your children at the end of the session (4.30pm). The coaches often have other sessions starting after this session finishes so it is really helpful if all the children can be collected promptly.

How to find us

All courses will run from our boathouse, situated on the bank of the Union Canal at the southern end of Harrison Road. The nearest Postcode is Polwarth Church – EH11 1LU.

What is the cost and how do I book?

Each term costs £21.00 (ie £3.50 a session).

The course fees cover the costs of the certification and also cover the cost of membership of Forth Canoe Club, meaning your child can come back and enjoy paddling on club nights too.

For insurance purposes any paddler who comes to the club more than 3 times must become a club member; this is why anyone who signs up for any course automatically becomes a club member. Forth Canoe Club are not able to provide a discount for the paddlers who are already members.
